Any Tips For A Fish-hating Mother Cooking Fish For Children?

I hate fish, I always have. It makes me retch, but I don’t want to pass that on to my children. Does anyone have any tips of recipes or easier ways to cook fish for children? I have seen ‘boil-in-the-bag’ fish mentioned on here, but I haven’t seen it in the UK – or has someone seen it here?
Thanks.

Buy any frozen fish portions (unbreaded) white fish will have less odour. Pop it in some tinfoil (make a sealed parcel) with a little stock/herbs/seasoning of any kind that your kids like and bake until flakey – can then mix this in with potatoes or whatever else suits.
Good luck!

It’s great that you want your children to be able t make up their own mind about food so good on you! I think that boil in the bag should only really be given to adults or older children because you want to give your little ones all the vitamins they can possibly get.
I don’t think there’s anyway to get rid of the smell when cooking fish so you may just have to put up with it :s You could try baking the fish in the oven by wrapping it in tin foil with a little seasoning that way it steams and cooks in it’s own juices and nothing is lost. The best advice I can give regarding the smell is to try a good odour neutralising air freshener and to keep up the good work – your children will grow up eating a wide variety of foods and you will know that if they don’t like something then it’s down to their own dislikes and not yours :D

It’s very hard to do a good job of cooking something you don’t like! And I feel about poultry the way you feel about fish.
So you might consider buying prepared, frozen fish and following the directions on the package. Another option might be tuna casseroles, using canned tuna. (My favorite consists of tuna, pasta, cut up hard-boiled eggs, diced cheese, a can of cream of mushroom soup, and some frozen peas. Since all you have to do with the fish is open the can, drain it, and dump the tuna into the mix, you ought to be able to get through that phase without getting sick! And the result is a complete one-dish meal with LOTS of protein!)

I also hate fish and all seafood – and haven’t yet cooked any for my daughter (age 13m) because i’m paranoid about the potential mercury content. I intend to start trying some seafood with her…but that would mean trying it myself and having to cook it – and I have no desire to do either. I think she can be perfectly healthy with a proper diet – even without fish, and if the day comes where she tries it and likes it – I guess i’ll be taking some seafood cooking classes or something LOL.

I am a fish/seafood hater too. I have never cooked it at home aside from grilling some shrimp once (that I didn’t eat) for a dinner party. I just figure that I am pretty healthy and haven’t eaten seafood (except tuna salad) so why should I have to feed it to my 12 month old? I think you can have a well balanced diet without fish. If you really want your children to eat it, try going out to a restaurant and order some for them or have your significant other order it and let them try it.
Did you ever wonder why there is such a significant portion of the population that hates fish? And like you never run into people who absolutely hate chicken! I think we weren’t meant to eat it…something that smells the same when it is fresh and cooking or dead and rotting shouldn’t be eaten! Cooking chiken smells nothing like a dead rotting chicken. And when you buy chicken, you don’t have to pluck the feathers off or cut the head off. Why then would they sell fish with scales and eyeballs still intact? Yuck!

Find a grocery or seafood place that sells very fresh fish and buy Tilapia. It’s a basic white fish that pretty much has no odor or taste and is easy to cook. It absorbs whatever flavor you cook with it (olive oil, garlic, butter, parsley….or go really easy and sautee it in your favorite oil-based salad dressing) and cooks pretty quick, so you won’t have to handle it too much.
Good luck, I hope it works for you. I’m a very picky eater too and hope I don’t pass that on to my daughter!

well, you can have someone else cook the fish for your kids! If that doesnt work out, try fish sticks or tuna sandwiches, which dont stink too badly. I had a friend who cooked fish in the microwave (sounds gross, I know) She put a tilapia filet in a bowl with some italian dressing and microwaved for 2 minutes or until flaky. Some grocers sell breaded fish filets, which arent as stinky either.

the only fish i’ve ever been able to stomach cooking is fish fingers. I can’t stand fish either but fish fingers don’t seem to smell as strong when they cook. I doubt they are as good for children as fresh fish though but you could always give them omega 3 supplements instead? failing that i’d recommend holding your nose as much as possible and just try to cook it without thinking about it!

You can buy boil in the bag fish in butter or herbed sauces from most freezer shops or supermarkets in the UK.
I buy the Ross`s boil in the bag fish from Iceland freezer store.
If the smell is putting you off fish the boil in the bags have no fish smell.

My kids are 6 and 4 and they love seafood. For fish I make talipia or catfish. I crack some eggs in a bowl and dip my fish in the eggs then I have breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic, and a little parsley and I coat the fish in that. Oven to 400 degrees and cook each side 10-20 min each. I then pore melted butter and squeeze lemons on top. They love it.

You can wrap the fish in tinfoil on top of some frozen veggies with half of a lemon squeezed over all of it and bake for 35-40min on 350. I like to do it this way because then your house doesn’t get that nasty fish smell. Works best with a white fish.

Try Tilapia..it is quite odorless…I can’t stand fish either, but my kids love it.

Plenty of boil in the bag fish in the supermarkets.Cod in Butter is available. Why not buy a deep fryer and then all you have to do is switch it on put the fish in and close the top.Breaded cod, breaded haddock,ETC

Go to a sushi restaurant more than 3 times, have a combination platter with some saki. Begin to LIKe fish, its good for you, and is delicious. Get over your fish hating bad habit!!

Exactly as Berry said, buy frozen unbatered fish. Wrap it in foil with some herbs and spices and stick in a george forman (or oven) until flaky.
You can mash it with cheese sauce :] Or parsley sauce..

You will be able to get boil in the bag fish in the freezer section of any supermarket. It normally comes in a butter or parsley sauce.
My kids loved them when they were little.

I just broil it in the toaster oven.
Don’t overcook fish, just cook it until it flakes easily
