When Cooking A Pot Roast In A Slow Cooker, When Do I Add The Potatoes?

Do I add them to the bottom of the roast at the beginning or do I add them on top/sides a few hours into the cooking??? I have heard both ways and wonder which is best…
If this helps, I do plan to brown it in a skillet and use onion soup mix, water salt, pepper and garlic in the slow cooker…
Thanks :)

I always brown my roast first. Put it on the bottom and then add the vegetables on top. Add juices and cook on low 8 hours.
I only brown mine with garlic salt and pepper. I would if I was you mix the onion soup mix and water seperately. Adding it on top.

You can add them in at the beginning if you like for easiness. Just make bigger potato chunks. Or usually the last 30-40 minutes with smaller/regular chunks. Add carrots too. Baby carrots can pretty much be added 30 min or so before or use cut your own carrots in bigger pieces and put in all day too. Secondly, place your added ingredients on the sides or top for more evened flavoring. That gets you onion mix on them too! I also add 2-3 TB.Worsh. sauce to water too depending on size of roast.

I find leaving them in all day makes them mushy no matter how big you leave the pieces. I would put my roast on at 7 AM when I was getting ready for work, I didn’t brown mine though….threw it in raw and then I add the potatoes and carrots and cabbage at noon when I am home for lunch……cooked on low all day everything was perfect at 5 when I got home….all I had left to do was make gravy from the drippings.

I put them in at the same time as the roast. Thickly slice them, and add carrots line the bottom of the crock pot, then put the road on top. Add onion and seasonings and liquid.
I rarely remove the cover on the crock pot, it adds cooking time.

I put mine on top in the beginning. It doesn’t take long for them to cook.So they don’t need to be on the bottom but by them in at the beginning they have a chance to soak up all flavrings from the meat.

I like to put them in about 1 – 1 1/2 hours before the roast is done. Potatoes will turn to mush if you cook them for 6 hours.
