YOU NEVER EVER, ADD OIL (OLIVE OR OTHERWISE) TO PASTA WATER
SALT ONLY! FOR FLAVOR! NO OIL!
Do ITALIAN CHEFS add oil to the H20 when cooking pasta?
I DON’T THINK SO
FACT! ITALIANS DON’T ADD OIL TO BOILING PASTA WATER.
OIL IN HAIR, YES. OIL IN FERRARI, YES. OIL IN PASTA WATER, NEVER!

I really don’t understand why you are even asking the question at all when you are already predisposed towards one answer already. You ask if you should add oil to pasta, and apparently you don’t; so if you already know why even ask at all.

I add oil in it… is it bad to put oil in pasta water?..

You only need to add salt to the water. Also, when the pasta is finished cooking don’t rinse it either. Put the sauce straight onto it as the starch left in the pasta will help the sauce stick to it. The only time you should rinse it is if it is going to be sitting there for a while or you are going to be using it for a cold pasta salad.
If you don’t want the water to boil over, then put a wooden spoon on the top of the pot.

Although I have to agree to those who said you’re not actually looking for a reply
my reply is: you’re right (except one point): although it may be true adding oil in the boiling water may prevent pasta to stick, it’s also true that: 1) if pasta stick it’s either not cooked properly (too much) or 2) pasta is made with flour “type 0″ instead of “type 00″. Italian pasta must be made with durum wheat type 00.
but know nobody do. I mean, in Italy; perhaps in America.
On the other hand, adding oil in the boiling water may prevent even the sauce to stick with pasta as it should…
Anyway, Italians who live in Italy *don’t* put oil in the water (although you can found somebody who do, and also chefs who say they shoudn’t).
The wrong point you raised is: “OIL IN HAIR, YES.”
No; Italians took this habits from America, decades ago

You can add a few drops of olive oil to prevent the pasta from sticking. I find your reaction to the concept interesting. Why does adding oil to your pasta anger you so much? Does your religion teach that it is blasphemy to mix oil and water? Does this offend the Flying Spaghetti Monster? If so, please tell me, because I do not want to incur His wrath and be forever cursed with rancid spaghetti sauce!

LOL-oil in hair, oil in Ferrari. I never put oil in the water to cook pasta, just salt. I toss the pasta in olive oil as soon as it’s drained-that keeps it from sticking together and adds a layer of rich flavor.

I don’t add oil. It’s pointless, even though I have heard of people adding oil to pasta water for a little flavor.

haha, hair and ferrari, yes. Pasta water, no. I agree!
I add a little oil to pasta after cooking thouh, and toss it around a bit. Makes it nice and glossy and yummy!

The reason people add oil to water for pasta is to prevent the pasta from sticking together and also lubricates teh water minimalizing a boil over. The problem with this it also prevents the sauce form sticking as well.
The solution to the situation is cook pasta in the biggest pot you have (like a huge stock pot and fill it 2/3 full bring to a boil. By doing this the pasta will not be sitcky since it has tons of free space to boil around in and the sauce will stick to the pasta now as well. You also have enough room and water so to prevent a boil over.
This is the recomendation of Alton Brown from the Food Network’s Good Eats show. And Alton knows his stuff.
If you still have boil overs try this trick take a stick of butter and run the stick around the insde of the pot up top once very lightly/. No need to cake it on.
WHat this does is prevent the bubbles from boiling over at last minute. When the bubbles reach that “butter ring” they will disapate due to the oil and thus preventing a boil over. This also will not effect your pasta at all so your sauce will still stick.

Put one Table Spoon of Butter in the water and it will keep it from sticking together and will taste better also.

You dont need to. even after you’ve left it lying at room temperature, you dont have to because jsut dup that clogged up spag into the warm water you’ve used to boil your spag and take them out again!

i do but only because it helps keep it from boiling over
